President Trump has signed a revised executive order on artificial intelligence after calling off a planned signing last month at the last minute. The order asks AI companies to give the government an advance look at their new models so officials can better prepare for potential security and economic fallout, reports the Washington Post. The order spells out a 30-day review period before public release, down from the original 90 days, notes Politico. The program is voluntary, but major firms are expected to opt in.

The reduction of the review from 90 days to 30 is a concession to those who argued for less government interference in the industry. Even so, the order represents a "shift for an administration that had promoted a hands-off approach to the powerful technology," per the New York Times. Under the directive, the Treasury Department will create a "cybersecurity clearinghouse" to review potential security issues in pending releases.

In a nod to those fearing massive red tape for companies, the order stipulates that "nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize the creation of a mandatory governmental licensing, preclearance, or permitting requirement for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new AI models, including frontier models."
