The White House Correspondents' Dinner is getting a do-over this summer. The White House Correspondents' Association announced Tuesday it will hold a makeup event on July 24, roughly three months after an armed man tried to breach the April 25 gala at the Washington Hilton, Politico reports. President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other cabinet members were evacuated that night; no one in the ballroom was harmed. Association president Weijia Jiang said the new dinner will feature tighter security and new entry rules.
"We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on the 250th anniversary of America and everything we stand for," Jiang wrote in a letter to members. The dinner, she said, "will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program. It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence." She said the decision to reschedule was "not automatic" and was made "after thoughtful consideration and input from our members," CNN reports.
She called it a "more intimate gathering" but didn't mention where it would be held. Trump later disclosed in a post on Truth Social that it will be held at the "Waldorf Astoria, on Pennsylvania Avenue, a Building and Ballroom that I built." He called the rescheduling a "sign of Strength and Fortitude" and said he had accepted Jiang's invitation to speak at the event. "I don't know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out," he wrote. "In any event, it will be a 'HOT' ticket!"
