Former child star Daveigh Chase's mother is offering a stark timeline of the actress's decline following a mid-2010s motorcycle crash, Entertainment Weekly reports, citing an interview Cathy Chase did with the Daily Mail. The elder Chase says the Ring and Lilo & Stitch star developed an addiction to oxycodone and other painkillers after injuring her back around 2016, then gravitated toward "the wrong people" and harder partying. Former manager John Ryan Jr. previously told EW that Daveigh Chase went to "a couple rehabs" and was battling alcohol more than "heavy drugs," adding that she had a period of sobriety before he lost contact in 2015.
Cathy Chase describes visiting her daughter in jail after multiple legal run-ins and says the last time she saw her, in 2019, Chase appeared "completely gone." She says a mix-up over Chase's release time meant she missed picking her up, a moment she still agonizes over despite a hospital chaplain urging her not to blame herself. She says after that, her daughter "went back to the streets and I couldn't find her." Cathy Chase says she continued looking online for signs of her daughter, People reports, and that she once saw an online video of a frail woman she believes was Daveigh and searched Skid Row in Los Angeles for her, unsuccessfully. Chase died Tuesday at 35 from complications of meningitis and blood infections; her mother identified her body and says she prayed over her with a chaplain, E! News reports.
