A teenager wanted in the killing of a Penn State student more than 1,700 miles away has been tracked down in Colorado, authorities say. US Marshals arrested 16-year-old Azzubair Outen-Fleming in Colorado Springs at the home of a distant relative after a month on the run; officials say he initially tried to pass himself off as someone else. Outen-Fleming is being held in a juvenile facility while Pennsylvania seeks his return to Philadelphia, where he faces a murder charge, Fox News reports.
Police say Outen-Fleming is one of two 16-year-olds suspected in the June 6 shooting of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt, who was walking home from an NBA Finals watch party when he was targeted in an apparent robbery yards from the home he shared with his father. Surveillance video captured Schmidt chasing someone and demanding his phone before a gunshot is heard; he was found with a chest wound and died minutes later at a hospital.
- Authorities said Wednesday that Outen-Fleming's stepfather was also in custody for trying to help the teen evade law enforcement. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Donte Abdulmalik has been charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice, and tampering with evidence. Sources tell NBC10 that the teen's mother has also been detained.
The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, is still at large. Krasner said Wednesday that investigators believe Smith is the one who pulled the trigger. Schmidt, a journalism major, had been set to graduate from Penn State in December. His father, William Schmidt, tells 6ABC that he's glad progress is being made in the investigation, but there's "nothing that's going to bring him back. So, nothing is going to be enough for me." He says he can no longer bear living in a home so close to where his son was killed. "It was just me and him here, and you know, it's a three-bedroom house," he says. "So, I just need to get out, right now."
