Princess Diana may have been the most famous divorced woman in the world, but a royal biographer says it was a status she "never wanted." Speaking on Hello!'s A Right Royal Podcast, Ingrid Seward—who knew Diana personally and edits Majesty Magazine—recalled the late princess insisting she "never, ever, ever" desired to end her marriage to then-Prince Charles, even as the split became inevitable, per InStyle. The couple separated in 1992 amid well-documented affairs and finalized their divorce in August 1996, a year before Diana's death at 36.
Designer Jacques Azagury, who created many of Diana's later looks, said she was visibly unsettled by the breakup but lit up whenever they focused on clothes instead. Both he and Seward described a woman deeply attached to the idea of family. Seward recounted Diana telling her that a young Prince Harry once asked, "Mummy, can you have another baby?" and, when told she'd need to remarry first, urged her to "hurry up then." Diana, Seward said, did hope to wed again but worried she had "so much baggage," joking she needed someone "very rich and very old," ideally a widower so she wouldn't be seen as a "husband-stealer."
Marie Claire also reports that one of Diana's former butlers is now revealing the princess's ire over how Queen Elizabeth II had handled her and Charles' split. "The princess was infuriated that the queen had consulted the government and the church first" before her, Paul Burrell says. "'This is my marriage and it is no one else's business!' she yelled" at the time.
