At NATO Summit, Trump Slams NATO Allies

President Trump is in Turkey for a NATO summit, and in his first public appearance, he didn't shy away from criticizing America's NATO allies. In remarks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, Trump complained about nations turning down US requests for help against Iran.

• "Italy turned us down, and Germany turned us down, and France turned us down," he said, reports the New York Times. "And in a way, I was testing people."
• "Europe's a very different place than it was 20 years ago," Trump said at another point. "They better be careful with immigration and energy, if they're not careful with those two things you're not going to have a Europe anymore."

• Greenland: Trump also revisited a familiar topic: His wish for the US, not Denmark, to control Greenland, reports CNBC. "Well, that's what hurt my relationship with NATO," he said. "Denmark doesn't spend money or really help Greenland, but it's an important part for the United States, and it's surrounded by China's ships and Russian ships." He complained that Europe balked at the idea, pointing to "all the money we spend to help them with Russia" and adding, "We could remove all of our soldiers out of Europe."
• Turkey: Trump praised Erdogan and announced the US would lift sanctions on Turkey, per the AP. That could pave the way for the sale of F-35 jets to Turkey despite the objections of Israel.
