Democrats don't currently have a candidate in Maine's Senate race, but they do have a message. A nonprofit allied with a top Senate Democratic super PAC is rolling out a $2.5 million TV and digital blitz in Maine aimed at chipping away at the Republican Sen. Susan Collins' image as a protector of abortion rights, Politico reports. The 30-second spot from Affordable Maine zeroes in on Collins' vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, his role in toppling Roe v. Wade, and her refusal to disavow that vote. The group will also spotlight her support for dozens of Trump-appointed judges who have upheld restrictive abortion laws.
"Because of Susan Collins, states are banning abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, and women are dying," the ad claims. "And she's still standing by it." The campaign lands just after Democrat Graham Platner exited the race following a sexual assault allegation that had some Democratic outfits threatening to walk away. Now they're back: Swing Left says it has restored Maine to its target map and is building a fund expected to top $500,000 for the eventual nominee. State Democrats plan to select Platner's replacement at a July 27 convention.
Last month, Collins said that she doesn't regret her vote to confirm Kavanaugh in 2018, but she was "disappointed" when he ruled with the majority to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, the Hill reports. At the time, she blasted the ruling and said Kavanaugh had misled her. "This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon," she said, per NBC News.
