Authorities in eastern India say they've made dozens of arrests after protests over the rape and killing of a girl, reportedly 11 or 12, spiraled into mob violence, including a fatal lynching, reports NBC News. Demonstrations erupted in and around Baruipur, near Kolkata, after the child's body was found in a pond on Sunday; protesters shut roads and set vehicles ablaze, according to police. A mob lynched a man suspected in the murder, though Sky News says police later declared him innocent. "He too will get justice," said West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, per CNN.
Senior officer Arvind Kumar Anand said 35 people have been detained so far, with more suspects being identified from widely shared videos. Separately, police said they shot dead one of four men arrested in the case, Prabhas Mondal, during an alleged escape attempt while he was being taken to the crime scene, notes Sky. Mondal's mother told local TV she would not claim his body, saying he had "received punishment" for his actions. The family of another suspect insists he was wrongly arrested. West Bengal's chief minister Suvendu Adhikari vowed no leniency for rapists, rioters, or those who attack bystanders, promising to "pursue such criminals to the fullest extent of the law." The case has renewed scrutiny of women's and girls' safety in India, long under the spotlight despite tougher post-2012 rape laws.
