Trump Lauds 'Gesture of Goodwill' From Iran

An American citizen held in Iran since late 2024 is finally out, with President Trump taking a victory lap, NBC News reports. In a Truth Social post Wednesday, Trump said Iran had allowed a "wrongfully detained" American to depart and called the move a "gesture of Goodwill," while also jabbing Joe Biden, who was president when the woman was barred from leaving Iran. He did not give her name, but said she is "in good condition" and outside Iran.

Her lawyer filled in the details: Human rights attorney Jared Genser identified her as Dena Karari, saying she'd been under a "coercive exit ban," repeatedly interrogated over her work with the US-based Children of Mehr Foundation, but never jailed. Though the coercive exit ban expired in April, Karari was still not allowed to leave, CBS News reports. Sources tell the outlet she suffered a heart attack last week. Genser credited Trump's "extraordinary and relentless efforts" for her release and said Karari is traveling back to the US. She is a dual US and Iranian citizen and was visiting family when her ordeal began, the Guardian reports. Several other Americans remain in Iranian custody.
