Iranian Strike in Jordan Kills 2 US Service Members

Two American troops have been killed in Jordan in what the Pentagon said Saturday was an Iranian ballistic missile strike. A third service member is missing, according to US Central Command. They're the first US troops killed due to direct Iranian fire since the first days of the war, per the AP, raising the number of American military deaths to 16. At least two missiles hit the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Axios reports, which hosts US forces and fighter jets, the military said.

Four troops were evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and later released, per CBS News, while others treated for minor injuries have returned to duty. Videos posted on social media appeared to show impacts and thick smoke rising from the area, per Axios. CENTCOM said the overnight strike came during a broader wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks that US and partner forces were working to repel. The US military said the two service members killed were defending against those strikes, per the Washington Post.
