Gulf Coast Braces for Tropical Storm Bertha

Tropical Depression Two is poised to pick up a name—and punch—for the northern Gulf Coast. Forecasters expect it to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha as it slides toward the shoreline from the Florida Panhandle to Texas, bringing heavy rain, coastal flooding, and tropical-storm-force winds, CNN reports. The tropical depression, which formed Sunday, is forecast to become Bertha by Monday night, reports ABC News.

• A tropical storm watch stretches from Florida's Ochlockonee River west to the Jefferson–Plaquemines Parish line in Louisiana, with additional watches possible farther west. Bands of rain were already sweeping into the Panhandle Monday.

• The system is battling dry air, its own broad structure, and increasing wind shear, all of which should keep it from rapidly intensifying. Current projections from the National Hurricane Center have Bertha brushing or coming ashore near southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi by Wednesday, then weakening as it tracks toward the upper Texas coast.
• Still, forecasters warn of 2 to 4 inches of rain across the western Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and possibly coastal Texas, with localized totals up to 8 inches and a flash-flood threat in cities such as New Orleans, CNN reports. A storm surge watch is up from the Mississippi River's mouth to the Alabama–Florida line, where water could rise 2 to 4 feet above normal.
• In an update Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service said the depression was around 100 miles south of Panama City, Florida, and "drifting erratically northwestward." The NWS said Air Force Reserve and NOAA aircraft would investigate the system Monday evening.
