Acropolis Visit Turns Terrifying for 2 Tourists

Tourists headed to one of Greece's most famous landmarks on Tuesday morning walked into a crime scene. Two Greek-American visitors were stabbed on a pedestrian street between the Acropolis' southern entrance and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, one of the country's busiest tourist corridors, per the Greek City Times. Local media report that a 60-year-old man began menacing people with a knife before attacking a man and a woman who were touring the site.

The woman suffered a leg wound described as minor; the man was more seriously injured in the arm, with officers reportedly applying a tourniquet before he was taken to a hospital. The Acropolis and museum stayed open throughout, and police said there was no ongoing threat. Authorities quickly arrested the suspect and are examining whether he has mental health issues, according to police.

Citing local media, People reports that the suspect is a known entity to law enforcement and is said to be a Greek national who's currently homeless. Such attacks are uncommon in Greece, including at the monument, which drew about 4.6 million visitors last year. The AP notes that another incident took place in April, when an elderly man allegedly opened fire in a courthouse and other service venue in the central part of Athens, wounding at least four people.
