ICE Agents Are Quietly Upping Their Arrest Count

US immigration agents quietly logged a milestone in June: the highest monthly arrest tally of President Trump's current term. Newly released ICE data analyzed by the Guardian shows 43,138 people were taken into custody that month, with the detained population climbing to 65,765 by mid-July, shy of the record 70,770 people in ICE detention in January. Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, more than 590,600 people have been deported. Two things to know:

• Advocates say the numbers reflect a shift from headline-grabbing raids to lower-profile tactics, including arrests at homes, workplaces, traffic stops, and during mandatory ICE check-ins.
• It's the first time updated figures have been provided since early April, despite a requirement instituted by Congress in 2019 that ICE release data on arrests, detentions, and deportations biweekly.
