CDC Adds 4 More States to Cyclospora Outbreak

America's largest recorded cyclospora outbreak just got bigger. As the Washington Post reports, federal health officials have now tied cases in nine states to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell, with Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania newly added to the list that previously included Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Investigators say the lettuce traces back to a single supplier in central Mexico, Taylor Farms; the company says it has pulled the product from the US market.

Cyclospora infections have been reported in at least 41 states this year, but officials are still sorting out which cases are linked to the lettuce-driven outbreak and which stem from other sources. North Carolina, for instance, is probing a separate cluster possibly tied to parsley or cilantro. The CDC recently more than doubled its national confirmed case count, while the FDA on Wednesday disclosed a separate cyclospora outbreak that has sickened at least 72 people, reports the New York Times. The agency was mum on the source and location of that outbreak.
