Birdsong around the globe may sound wildly different, but a massive new analysis suggests it all springs from the same tiny toolkit. French researchers dissected some 116,000 recordings from more than 3,000 bird species and concluded that every song is built from just eight basic sound types, or "motifs"—three kinds of trills, three kinds of whistles, and two additional structures the researchers call "chaotic notes and harmonic stacks," reports Phys.org.
Using a worldwide library of volunteer recordings and AI to track how songs change over time, the team found a surprising pattern: Habitat shapes how birds "compose," per the BBC. Species in dense tropical forests tend to rely on simpler notes—like flat whistles—that cut through thick vegetation and noisy soundscapes, while birds in temperate zones more often use intricate, information-packed sequences suited to closer-range communication.
The work, published in Science, suggests bird songs are tightly tuned to their environments—environments now being reshaped by human activity. Lead author Quentin Bacquelé, a PhD student at the University of Saint-Etienne, says the motifs could help scientists understand how birds will adapt to rising background noise—and underscores that the natural soundscape itself is something worth preserving.
