Canadians' Trips to US Plunge

Canadians appear to be voicing their views on the US with their passports. New data from Statistics Canada show trips south of the border fell 25% in 2025, coinciding with President Trump's return to the White House, reports the Washington Post. Canadians made 29.1 million visits to the US last year, down from 39 million in 2024, with their spending in the country dropping by $2.3 billion to about $13.3 billion, notes Axios.

"Following the change in the US administration in early 2025 and the implementation of America First policies, Canadian travel sentiment shifted abruptly," wrote Laura Presley and Carter McCormick, analysts with the Statistics Canada office. Early 2026 numbers suggest the trend is holding. Trump has slapped tariffs on Canadian goods, opted against renewing the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and even floated the idea of Canada as a "51st state." The resulting pullback is the steepest decline in more than five decades of records, outside the pandemic and post-9/11 periods.
