Archaeologists have turned a notorious 17th-century shipwreck into a case study in early global logistics. New research on the Dutch East India Company vessel Batavia, which sank off Western Australia in 1629, finds that its stone cargo was tracing a complex European supply chain long before modern container shipping. Using microscopic zircon grains in sandstone blocks, bricks, and ballast recovered from the wreck, Curtin University scientists showed the building stones didn't come from one quarry, as long assumed, but from at least two regions in what is now Germany, Phys.org reports.
The prefabricated blocks were likely bound for the company's fortress in Jakarta. The Batavia was carrying 341 people, silver bullion, commercial goods, and construction materials when it wrecked in the Abrolhos Islands after a mutiny, per CTV News. The work, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, suggests the VOC was coordinating multisource construction shipments across continents—evidence, researchers say, of a far more intricate 1600s trade network than written records alone reveal.
