A veteran funeral director in northern England was handed a 20-year prison term on Friday for what a judge called "anguish and pain on a scale beyond comprehension." Robert Bush, 48, admitted to a yearslong scheme in which he failed to bury or cremate bodies as promised, handed grieving families ashes from other people, and pocketed donations meant for a dozen charities, Reuters reports. The operation at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull unraveled in 2024 when a temp worker sounded the alarm while Bush was on vacation, describing the premises as "a horror scene," according to prosecutors.
Police discovered 35 bodies at the funeral home, some left uncovered and decomposing. Financial records revealed in court, meanwhile, showed that Bush had spent more than $55,000 on vacations, nearly $30,000 on motorcycle racing, and upward of $23,000 on home renovations, per the Independent. "I think people who have lost their money will want to know what it went on," the judge in the case noted in asking for Bush's spending habits.
"When I discovered what had happened, it reopened that trauma in a way I cannot fully describe," one mother of a stillborn infant said after finding out her son's ashes sat in a paper bag on the floor of the funeral director's premises for more than a year, not the tiny blue coffin she thought contained his ashes, per the AP. "It felt like being pulled back into the darkest time of my life." Bush pleaded guilty to more than 60 charges, including fraud, theft, and preventing lawful burials over almost 12 years.
