Republicans are facing an ugly political problem in Ohio in the form of Max Miller. It's "Graham Platner on steroids," one GOP operative tells Politico. Miller, a MAGA-friendly congressman, is facing nasty abuse allegations from his ex-wife, which he adamantly denies. His ex-wife happens to be the daughter of MAGA-friendly Sen. Bernie Moreno, who released a scathing statement on Sunday calling Miller unfit to serve in the House and in need of psychological help, per CNBC. "I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter," wrote Moreno.
Politico lays out the dilemma for Republicans: Condemn a colleague in a competitive race or risk looking like hypocrites after they went after Platner and former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell when they faced similar accusations. Top Ohio and national Republicans have largely declined to comment, and President Trump also declined to weigh in when asked on Sunday if Miller should resign. "I'll be looking at it," he told reporters aboard Air Force One, per Forbes. "So far it's accusations."
Miller's opponent, Democratic ironworker Brian Poindexter, has been hammering the issue, saying if the allegations are proven, "Max Miller should be in jail." Miller, for his part, is using a similar point in his own defense: "If these accusations were true, I would be in jail," he said in a 20-minute livestream over the weekend, per the New York Times. As the controversy plays out, the Cook Political Report has increased Democratic chances of flipping the seat, downgrading it from "solid" Republican to "likely."
