Shelley Fabares, Star of Coach and Donna Reed, Dies at 82

Shelley Fabares, who grew up on TV as Donna Reed's daughter and later romanced Coach Hayden Fox, has died at 82, People reports. Her family says the actor and singer died Saturday in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones. Husband Mike Farrell of M*A*S*H fame and her stepchildren praised her as "a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort," and asked for privacy as they grieve.

Fabares broke out as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show, scored a No. 1 hit with the song "Johnny Angel" in 1962, and was the leading lady in three Elvis Presley films, Deadline reports. Variety reports she starred in a number of other "teen-centric B movie romps." She released four albums and worked steadily in TV, including Brian's Song and a key role on Coach, which earned her two Emmy nominations. A child actor and model from age 3, she later became active in Alzheimer's advocacy and survived a 2000 liver transplant. She is survived by Farrell and his children.
