He Fell on Hot Sidewalk, Will Now Lose His Leg

A simple walk in triple-digit heat has left an Arizona grandfather facing the loss of his leg. Family members say 72-year-old Grant Siler collapsed on a Bullhead City sidewalk on Aug. 3, when temperatures hit about 120 degrees, and remained there for roughly an hour before someone found him, per Fox News. By then, Siler had second- and third-degree burns, heat stroke, and organ shock, according to a GoFundMe set up by relatives. His body temperature topped 105 degrees, putting him at risk of seizures and permanent brain damage, reports KSAZ.

He was airlifted to a Las Vegas burn ICU, where doctors later determined right leg tissue was too damaged to salvage and scheduled an above-the-knee amputation for Aug. 31. His wife has been commuting 90 minutes each way to the hospital while working, and the family says donations will help cover medical bills, home modifications, and a future prosthetic. Siler's daughter, Heather Crook, tells KSAZ he's "an Idaho born-and-raised farm boy," usually stoic in the face of pain. "So for him to holler out in pain … it's really hard to hear."
