Amid Canada Tussle, Trump Floats 'Lake America'

President Trump's latest shot at Canada involves a "Gulf of America"-style rebrand on a Great Lake. In a Truth Social post Tuesday, he said the US is "giving serious consideration" to rebranding Lake Ontario as "Lake America," claiming Washington doesn't expect to "do much business with Ontario any longer," reports CNN. The remark follows the collapse of trade talks and Trump's warning of "far WORSE" consequences if Canadian leaders don't "fall in line." Canada, notes the Wall Street Journal, is less than likely to give a thumbs up to "a unilateral name change by the US."

The dispute has intensified since Trump imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, with Canada announcing matching retaliatory measures starting Sept. 8. Trump has repeatedly targeted Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, calling Ford the "less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive" brother of the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford. Ford, for his part, said Monday that former President Reagan would be "throwing up" over Trump's trade moves.
