11 Shot, 2 of Them Killed at Neighborhood Cookout

A mass shooting at a late-night neighborhood gathering left two people dead and nine others hospitalized, authorities said Sunday. Police say 11 people were shot just after midnight along a street where residents had been holding a cookout, NBC News reports. The injured were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. No arrests have been made, per NJ.com, and no names were released. Mayor Reed Gusciora said more than 200 people were at what he described as an "unauthorized gathering" when gunfire broke out.

Police plan to crack down on street parties, the mayor said. "This is not about criminalizing people for gathering together," Gusciora said in a statement. "It is about recognizing the difference between a gathering and hundreds of people occupying a residential street without authorization, particularly when firearms and violence become part of that environment."
