Maria Bartiromo's long run at Fox has abruptly wrapped. Fox News Media—parent of both Fox News and Fox Business—announced that the anchor had left the network effective immediately, and it offered no explanation beyond a brief thank-you, reports NBC News. "We thank Maria for her work over the last 12½ years and wish her all the best on her next chapter," said the Fox statement.
Bartiromo joined Fox Business in 2014 as global markets editor, going on to host Mornings with Maria and Maria Bartiromo's Wall Street, and to anchor Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News. She was previously a high-profile CNBC face and the first journalist to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Her Fox programs had become frequent stops for members of President Trump's Cabinet and consistent ratings draws for Fox. The surprise departure is similar to how Fox parted ways with longtime host Tucker Carlson, notes the Hollywood Reporter.
Mediaite notes the politics at play: Critics have faulted Bartiromo for what they see as coverage "increasingly favorable" to the Trump administration. Bartiromo's reporting after the 2020 election was cited in the high-profile lawsuit brought against Fox by Dominion Voting Systems, which the network settled for $787.5 million. And NPR notes that until Thursday, Bartiromo "was the only individual defendant still working at the network" in a second defamation lawsuit filed against Fox by a voting software company.
