Apple's debut foldable smartphone may not kill the iPad Mini, but it's making at least one longtime skeptic think twice. Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Nicole Nguyen got early hands-on time with the $1,999 iPhone Duo and came away with a few big impressions: The crease of the fold was "barely visible," the phone feels kind of chunky for everyday use, and the hybrid form factor makes it an interesting choice that falls somewhere between phone and tablet. Opened up, the Duo's 7.6-inch inner display is close to iPad Mini territory, and Apple uses a matte screen, plus clever interface shifts, to make the fold line hard to see while you watch video or swipe around.
The trade-offs are real, however. Closed, the Duo is heavier and thicker than rival Samsung and Google foldables, and its wider shape makes one-handed typing a bit more challenging, even for larger hands. Camera zoom tops out at 2X, but dual screens enable tricks like letting subjects see themselves on the outer display. With battery and durability specs in line with the iPhone 18 Pro, Nguyen still isn't ready to recommend the Duo yet, at least not until she can do a full review—but she's unexpectedly tempted. "The Duo costs $800 more than an iPhone 18 Pro, and I'm not sure I want to spend that premium on a first-generation Apple device," she writes. "But I'm not ruling out the idea that a Duo might one day be in my future." Read more about her first look here.
