Elon Musk is in full attack mode over Alex Gibney's new documentary about him, unloading online and threatening legal action. After the four-hour film, titled Musk, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Musk spent hours on X blasting the Oscar-winning director as a "bitter old man," a "horrible human," and accusing him of having "zero integrity." He dismissed the documentary as a "hit piece that misses" and "boring," and shared images suggesting Gibney is being controlled by Democrats and George Soros, plus a photo of the director with a poop emoji on his head, Deadline reports.
Musk's lawyer Alex Spiro has warned Gibney's Jigsaw Productions over what he calls a false insinuation that Musk used Starlink to tilt the 2024 election toward Donald Trump, according to a legal letter cited by the New York Post. In the film, conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair, who had a child with Musk in 2024, claims he told her he would unleash an "anomaly in the matrix" before the vote. Musk denies both that he used Starlink to affect the election and that St. Clair was ever offered a $40 million NDA settlement, saying she has "a history of making false claims."
- Gibney said that as he sought to interview people for the film, he found that many were afraid to talk about Musk, Reuters reports. "There was a tremendous sense of fear of talking, really almost existential fear, both among people who were his critics, people who were his business colleagues and people who are his friends," the director said before the screening in Venice. "I talked to many, many, many, many people who, except for some of the brave people who are here, declined to speak."
- Gibney also said that he found that Musk's story "was not, in a way, a new tech story," Deadline reports. "His story turns out to be the story of the confidence man, the stock pumper, his wealth and power comes from inflated stock, and so I had told that story before with Enron and with Elizabeth Holmes, and so it was a story that was oddly familiar to me."
