A Bloomberg analysis has revealed a remarkable stat: Since returning to office, President Trump has made more stock trades than all members of Congress combined. Specifically, Trump or his money managers have made about 28,700 such trades in the last 17 months, compared to a total of 22,200 disclosed by lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The story is framed in the context of proposed new legislation: A House GOP bill would bar trading by lawmakers and their families but not the president, who can move markets with policy or even a social media post.
Trump supports the restrictions, asserting in his State of the Union earlier this year that the law should be passed immediately so Congress "cannot corruptly profit from using insider information." The White House says Trump's index-style portfolio is run independently, but ethics experts warn that even trades made without insider information can appear conflicted. Bloomberg found about 20 examples of Trump buying stakes in companies within a week of promoting them publicly. The list includes DoorDash, Nvidia, and Tesla.
