A Democrat from Maine just gave a New York Republican a rare political boost. Rep. Jared Golden, who is not seeking reelection, publicly endorsed GOP Rep. Mike Lawler in his tight suburban New York race against Democrat Cait Conley, praising Lawler as "a true partner" and urging voters to reward lawmakers who work across the aisle, Politico reports. The two have teamed up on the Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act and sit in the centrist Problem Solvers Caucus.

Golden has already rankled his own party this month by siding with Republicans on key procedural votes, prompting calls from House Democrats for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to penalize him. Lawler, whose district isn't affected by the lobstering rules he backed changing, said he and Golden have focused on "common ground" for their constituents.

  • "That is how Congress is supposed to work: members of different parties set aside their disagreements, find a problem that matters to the country and fix it," Golden wrote in an op-ed at lohud.com.

"I am leaving Congress in January by my own choice, but I have not given up on the institution, and voters should not either," Golden wrote. "The Congress we get is the one we elect, and the country needs fewer members who treat the job as a stage and more who treat it as work." Golden praised Lawler as a friend of "mom-and-pop shops," though Conley disagreed on X, accusing her rival of serving "corporations and special interests" and noting that he had voted for President Trump's "reckless tariffs" eight times.
