OpenAI is rolling out its answer to Meta's Muse, and it wants to quietly run your digital life in the background, the Verge reports. The company on Tuesday unveiled "Dots," always-on AI agents powered by its GPT-6 Astra model that can tap a cloud computer, browse the web, and plug into more than 4,000 apps while learning the user's habits over time. Wired explains the difference between an "always-on" agent and a typical chatbot session like so: "These agents constantly crawl the web and attempt to complete whatever task you assign to them."
Users interact with a Dot via chat or voice through ChatGPT on web, desktop, or mobile, with integrations for Microsoft Teams and Slack and text messaging on the way. For now, users get one Dot that can, say, ship app updates or clip interview highlights while pinging the user with questions and status updates. OpenAI says Dots follow built-in as well as custom rules, auto-review their own actions for safety, and won't count against ChatGPT usage limits. The feature launched for Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise customers Tuesday. (Some on the internet think Elon Musk pulled a fast one on OpenAI by purchasing the URL "dot.com" in July, TechCrunch reports.)
