Tampa Bay fans who looked up the passing stats Sunday might have wondered if the box score was broken, NBC News reports. In a rain-soaked 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the Buccaneers tried only three passes and didn't complete a single one—yet still cruised to a shutout victory at home.
Coach Todd Bowles said the weather, not a mandate, dictated the game plan: nearly an inch of rain and heavy wind turned Raymond James Stadium into a run-only zone. Tampa responded with 56 rushing attempts for a franchise-record 324 yards, led by Bucky Irving's 170 yards and Kenny Gainwell's 140. "Rain, snow, muddy, you're going to have to play in it anyway," Irving said, per Fox News. The NFL says it's the league's first win without a completed pass since 1974, and the first by double digits under those conditions since 1945.
And thanks to a sack, ESPN reports the Bucs finished with minus-2 net passing yards. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., meanwhile, completed just eight out of 24 pass attempts, throwing four interceptions and fumbling once.
