There is no rest for the weary checkbook of billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, who is at it again with a $70 million check to Meals on Wheels America, reports Fortune. The national network, which delivers food, check-ins, and companionship to more than 2 million older and homebound Americans a year, says the unrestricted gift arrives as about a third of its local programs have waitlists, with seniors typically waiting four months for services.
Meals on Wheels says Scott's money will go toward boosting long-term capacity across its roughly 5,000 community-based programs rather than being tied to a single project, in keeping with her "trust-based" approach. "We will steward the investment thoughtfully and responsibly to help generate economies of scale and impact that strengthen the capacity of local providers so they can reach more older adults with meals, connection, and care," says Kristine Templin, chief development officer at Meals on Wheels America. "Ultimately, success means more seniors are able to access the support they need to live more nourished, independent, and healthy lives."
The former Amazon executive and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos has now given away about $26 billion through her Yield Giving foundation, including more than $1 billion to historically Black colleges and universities, reports Fortune. She's also given hundreds of millions for housing through Habitat for Humanity and sizable gifts to climate and youth organizations.
