A man who lost his son in a December house fire has been charged with shooting the teenage son of a man he believed "for some reason" was involved in setting the blaze, authorities say. Prosecutors say 61-year-old Gyaw Way of St. Paul critically injured the 17-year-old on April 7 in apparent revenge, despite officials having ruled the fire that killed 29-year-old Ka Taw Htoo was accidental, likely caused by a space heater igniting bedding, per the St. Paul Pioneer Press. According to the criminal complaint, Way had been overseas at the time of the blaze but came to believe the teen's father—a disabled man he once served as caretaker—was somehow involved.
Police say Way lured the man to a home by offering to repay a loan. The man's son drove him, and Way allegedly got into the car with both men before shooting the teen once in the chest without speaking. Authorities say the father was "shocked" but unable to render aid as his son was screaming in pain, per KARE11 and the Pioneer Press. The boy's injuries, including damage to his liver and lung, were initially described as life-threatening, though he's expected to survive. Officers say Way appeared intoxicated and, during his arrest, said "sorry," "baby die," and "no accident." His 26-year-old son is accused of hiding the gun and is charged with aiding an offender. A judge has ordered a mental health evaluation for Way, who faces a first-degree assault charge.
