'I think you're out over your Catholic skis here, OK?' says Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert thinks JD Vance should pump the brakes on lecturing the pope about his war censure. On Wednesday's Late Show, Colbert, who has long identified as Catholic, mocked the vice president's comments about Pope Leo XIV's criticism of the US bombing of Iran. At a Turning Point USA event in Georgia on Tuesday, Vance had warned the pope to "be careful when he talks about matters of theology." Colbert's response, per the New York Times: "JD, I know you're Catholic, but you joined in 2019, OK? I've been genuflecting since the mid-1960s" and "I think you're out over your Catholic skis here, OK?"

He extended the bit with a blow-by-blow of Catholic ritual, arguing Vance should "sit down," stand, kneel, shake hands, and go take communion with no quick exit—"because you know who left the Last Supper early? Judas." Over on The Daily Show, guest host Ronny Chieng joked that Vance was forced to side against the pontiff because "Trump's position is that he is Jesus Christ." Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel pointed to the poor showing for Vance's talk, quipping that he's "least popular vice president in more than two decades" and "maybe it's time for a new eyeliner," per Rolling Stone.
