Palantir's latest big government deal isn't with the Pentagon—it's with the Department of Agriculture. The data analytics firm has landed a $300 million contract with the USDA, which plans to use Palantir's software to manage US farmland as global tensions, trade disputes, and foreign land purchases rattle food supply chains, reports CNBC. The deal expands Palantir's footprint beyond its core defense work and comes amid concern in Washington about countries like China buying US agricultural land.
Per a joint press release, the deal will "support the National Farm Security Action Plan (NFSAP) and modernize how USDA delivers services to America's farmers. The agreement advances two priorities: strengthening farm security as a national security imperative and accelerating producer-first program delivery across USDA's Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC) mission areas ... and in doing so, secure the nation's breadbasket."
Seeking Alpha notes Palantir's software already powers the USDA's Landmark platform, which allows for online enrollment in the Farmer Bridge Assistance Program and provides acreage reporting tools for farmers. In CNBC's view, "The agreement ... underscores Palantir's growing role inside the US government as it goes beyond cornerstone defense contracts supporting US military modernization."
