The stalled talks between the US and Iran has resulted in an unwanted milestone at the gas pump: The national average for a gallon of regular gas climbed to $4.18 on Tuesday, its highest level since April 2022, according to AAA. That's up 40% from when the war began, notes the New York Times. The move tracks a sharp run-up in crude: Brent, the global benchmark, was trading around $104 a barrel on Tuesday, more than 40% above its pre-strike level and roughly $10 higher than a week ago.
In many areas, the price jumped in steep fashion overnight. The Augusta Free Press in Waynesboro, Virginia, for example, notes that local prices rose 14 cents from Monday to $4.18. In Columbus, Ohio, the average price rose from $3.93 on Monday to $4.29 on Tuesday, notes WBNS.
