Britney Spears was charged Thursday in California with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of both drugs and alcohol. Prosecutors in Ventura County who filed the case said the pop star will be arraigned Monday; they have not publicly identified the drug they accuse her of using, per the New York Times. Spears was arrested the night of March 4 after officers reported seeing her speeding and driving erratically, according to the California Highway Patrol. A Spears representative at the time called it "an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable" and said she would comply with the legal process.

Roughly a month after the arrest, her team said Spears had voluntarily entered a treatment program, without specifying what kind. In her 2023 memoir, Spears pushed back on the notion of a longstanding substance abuse problem, writing that her drinking was never "out of control" and describing Adderall as her "drug of choice." Because the charge is a misdemeanor, the AP reports, prosecutors said Spears will not be required to appear in court for the arraignment.
