After Google Glitch, Locals Warn Drivers: 'GPS Is Wrong!'

Neighbors on a quiet Toronto street say they've just lived through the downside of blind faith in GPS. Residents along Winona Drive tell the Toronto Star that for days, drivers were barreling the wrong way down their one-way, southbound street after Google Maps incorrectly labeled it as a northbound thoroughfare, with the glitch apparently live since at least April 29, per UPI. Homemade "GPS is wrong!" signs didn't work, and residents escalated the matter to city officials and police.

City Councilor Josh Matlow said Toronto's Transportation Services contacted Google directly, and the city installed a temporary "do not enter" sign and barricade to block the unintended entrance. Google said the mapping error has been fixed since Monday. Matlow wrote online that he plans to press the company on what went wrong and how it will avoid similar mistakes, warning that mapping errors "cause real and immediate safety impacts" and urging the tech giant to move faster on complaints and be clearer about how it handles them.
