Comedian Says Her Fridge Almost Killed Her

Laura Clery says her fridge almost killed her. The comedian, actor, and author, known for roles on shows including 2 Broke Girls, says she was at home alone with her two young children when her roughly 600-pound refrigerator tipped and trapped her, pinning her lower back and hips against a kitchen island, USA Today reports. In video shared on Instagram, Clery is seen on a stretcher and in an ambulance asking firefighters to confirm what happened; she later wrote that it became difficult to breathe and she was "thinking this is the dumbest way anyone has ever died." She said the three firefighters that freed her "handled everything like absolute heroes" and she is "forever grateful."

Clery said doctors were surprised she escaped without broken bones, though she remains bruised and sore. On Patreon and Facebook, she described the fridge as a large French-door model that is "supposed to be mounted into the wall." She said she saw it start to shift after her son climbed it, and the fridge toppled onto her when she tried to push it back into place. "I couldn't move," she said. "I tried to push it off and it didn't even slightly budge. It felt like pushing against a building." She said she wants to sue the contractors who installed it.

"It nearly killed me," she wrote. "And it could have absolutely killed my child. This should never have been possible. This was negligence." Clery said it was "the most terrifying night" of her life, Fox News reports. "It hurts to walk, and I feel like I got hit by a truck that also lives in my kitchen. But I'm okay. My kids are okay. And I cannot stop thinking about how differently this could have gone," she wrote. "If my phone hadn't been in my pocket, I don't know what would have happened."
