14-Year-Old Dead in NYC 'Subway Surfing' Stunt

One teen is dead and another seriously injured after they fell from the top of a moving subway train in New York City, reports Gothamist. Police say the male teens, ages 14 and 18, were riding atop the train—a stunt known as subway surfing—as it traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Officers say the younger teen had injuries consistent with a multi-story fall, and he was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. The New York Post reports that he was struck in the head by a beam while atop the train. The 18-year-old, discovered on the elevated tracks, was hospitalized in critical condition.

"I'm imploring families, friends, teachers, and others coming into contact with teens engaging in these suicidal stunts to get them to stop," said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The city's Metropolitan Transit Authority has been battling a rise of subway surfing, which is often filmed and posted online, notes USA Today. NYPD data show at least five or six subway-surfing deaths each year since 2023.
