A Florida man who walked into a Wawa bathroom and walked out with $30,000 that wasn't his says he never thought about keeping it, the Washington Post reports. Police in Riviera Beach, Fla., say 58-year-old construction worker Luis Salavar (variously reported as Salazar) found a black fanny pack on a grab bar in the restroom on May 3, then searched the store and parking lot for its owner before leaving with it. Inside, he discovered stacks of $50 and $100 bills—$30,023 in all, cash the 24-year-old owner had just made selling Pokémon collectibles and planned to use toward a medical procedure his younger sister needed.
The owner realized the pack was missing while driving to Coral Springs for a family gathering, turned around, and called police, prompting a grand-theft investigation. Detectives tracked Salavar through the rental van he was driving and asked him to come to the station. There, he handed the fanny pack over with the cash intact. He told the Post, "$30,000 is great, but it's not mine to keep," adding, "I like to earn my money." He tells WPBF the fanny pack's owner cried upon counting the money and realizing it was all still there. Police ultimately labeled the case lost property, not theft. The grateful owner offered Salavar dinner; he turned it down, saying he had simply done the right thing.
