Reality TV viewers are mourning the loss of Matt Brown, the eldest son from Discovery's Alaskan Bush People, who has died at 42 in Washington state, People reports. His brother, Solomon Isaiah "Bear" Brown, said on Instagram that Matt's body was recovered from a river on Saturday and identified at the scene by their brother Noah. Bear said the family believes Matt died by suicide, adding that Matt had long struggled with addiction and had recently "fallen off the wagon." However, officials have not released any final determinations. A member of the search party tells TMZ searchers first spotted Matt's jacket in fast-moving water not far from where he'd last been seen alive.
Matt appeared on Alaskan Bush People, which documented his family's unconventional lifestyle living off the grid in the wilderness of Alaska and then Washington, from its 2014 debut until 2019, when he left amid public battles with alcohol and entered rehab. In past interviews, he spoke candidly about seeing his drinking escalate and seeking treatment, later documenting his recovery and day-to-day life on YouTube, where he built an audience of more than 65,000 subscribers. In his final videos, he described living a sparse, itinerant life but insisted he was "doing good" mentally. Bear asked fans not to blame their mother, Ami Brown, saying she "always" cared for Matt. Matt is survived by his mother and six siblings; his father, Billy Brown, died in 2021. The series ended in 2022, USA Today reports.
