An actor whose face you likely recognize, even if his name doesn't ring a bell, has been killed in Los Angeles. James Handy, a veteran character actor with credits in films from Jumanji to Top Gun: Maverick, was found fatally stabbed outside his home in the Tarzana neighborhood on Wednesday, according to the LAPD. The 81-year-old had multiple wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, the BBC reports. Police say they arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy's girlfriend, on suspicion of murder.
In a statement, police said officers responded to a "radio call of unknown trouble" after a 911 caller told dispatchers, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin," Variety reports. Police say Gledhill, who lived at the home with his mother and Handy, flagged them down when they arrived. Gledhill was booked into Van Nuys Jail with bail set at $2 million. Over a six-decade career, Handy stacked up dozens of roles in movies and TV shows, including NYPD Blue, Law & Order, CSI: NY, Alias, The West Wing, and The X Files.
Handy, who was born in New York, played a bartender in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, his most recent movie role. He was an exterminator in Jumanji and a doctor in Logan. One of his biggest roles was in 1989's K9, the Independent reports. He appeared in the 2021 comedy Senior Entourage, directed by Brian Connors, who described Handy as "one of the finest character actors" in Hollywood. "I could not have asked for a more talented, humble, or gracious client and friend than James Handy," Pam Ellis-Evenas from the Ellis Talent Group told the AP.
