FDA Issues Top-Level Recall for Utz Chips
One of the recalled flavors.   (FDA)

Anyone putting out chips for some July 4th noshing might want to check the bags. The FDA has upgraded Utz's May recall of certain Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips to its highest level of concern over the risk of salmonella, reports NBC News. The Class 1 alert is tied to dry milk powder used in seasonings. That powder, from California Dairies via a third-party supplier, tested negative before use, and Utz said in May that no illnesses have been reported. No details were given about the reason for the upgraded recall. USA Today lists the affected brands:

  • 1.5-ounce Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips
  • 2.5-ounce, 8-ounce Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips
  • 2-ounce Dirty Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips
  • 1.5-ounce Zapp's Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips
  • 2-ounce Dirty Maui Onion Potato Chips
  • 8-ounce, 2.5-ounce Zapp's Big Cheezy Potato Chips
  • 2-ounce Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips
  • Dates, UPC codes: The chips have best-by dates of July and August 2026. For specifics, including UPC codes, see the FDA recall notice or call 1-877-423-0149.
