A drive through Hebron ended with a Palestinian infant fatally shot and his parents wounded after Israeli soldiers opened fire on their car, according to officials and the child's father. Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, who was 7 months old, died at the hospital after being shot on Friday in the Tel Rumeida area, reports the Guardian; his parents were said to have been injured. Per the BBC, the Israel Defense Forces said troops believed a car was speeding toward them and one soldier fired "single shots."
The IDF later acknowledged that those hit appeared to be innocent civilians and noted that "the incident is under review," per the Guardian. The group also expressed "deep sorrow for any harm caused to uninvolved individuals." Palestinian news agency WAFA reports that the family had been traveling from Bethlehem to Hebron to visit relatives, per the AP. Sam's father, academic Fahd Abu Haikal, told Haaretz he'd fully stopped the car as ordered, hands visible on the wheel, when the shooting began, insisting the soldier could clearly see his family inside. He's demanding an investigation and accountability.
The case follows a March incident in which Israeli forces opened fire on a car in the northern Jordan Valley, killing a Palestinian couple and two of their children, according to rights group B'Tselem, which has accused the military of obstructing medical access. The UN said in May that more than 1,000 Palestinians, including at least 240 children, have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the Israel-Hamas war began.
