An emerging Venezuelan soccer talent is among the nearly 1,500 people killed after powerful earthquakes struck the country last week. The Venezuelan Football Federation on Saturday confirmed the death of 18-year-old Yimvert Berroterán, who represented Venezuela at the 2025 Under-17 World Cup before joining Venezuela's Under-20 side, the Athletic reports. Berroterán had recently played for Universidad Central de Venezuela, helping the club to a Venezuela Cup win.

The federation said he wore his country's colors with "pride, commitment and love," while his agency, Secasports, wrote that his "untimely passing" left them "with immeasurable sadness," per People. UCV FC shared a video of his goals and celebrations, noting "our great champion" will "keep scoring goals wherever you are" and offering condolences to his family and teammates. At least 1,719 people have died following the twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, a lawmaker said Monday, per CNN.
