Just over a week after a Tesla slammed into a home in Texas, fatally striking a woman inside, a vehicle of the same make drove into a cafe patio in California, again leaving one dead. The crash happened around 2:30pm Monday at an Urbane Cafe in a busy shopping center in Simi Valley, according to local police. Aerial footage showed a white Tesla stopped among mangled tables, chairs, and umbrellas within the restaurant's patio area. A 79-year-old woman was found trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene, per the Independent. Five others sustained minor injuries, reports ABC News.
A police official said the driver, a 64-year-old woman traveling with four juveniles in the car, tried to make a right turn in a parking lot but "went over the sidewalk," hitting the 79-year-old and narrowly missing two others, per KABC. The driver was hospitalized with moderate injuries and one juvenile suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not said whether any driver-assistance features were in use at the time. The driver in the Texas crash claimed to have been using Tesla's driver-assistance technology, leading to heightened scrutiny of the feature, though Tesla said the driver overrode the system by pressing the accelerator.
