A Texas man thought he'd found a girlfriend, but investigators say scammers found a gateway into the US banking system instead. Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Joe Barrett details how 49-year-old Garrick Stafford of Tyler spent almost two years texting with "Sarah Williams," a supposed Miami makeup artist with red hair, sending her $65,000 and, at her direction, moving another $50,000 through his accounts in a money laundering scheme. The relationship unraveled only when South Carolina investigator and "scam hunter" Markus Johnson called to ask why $21,000 from a business fraud case had landed at Stafford's bank. Barrett reports that "Sarah" was actually a married couple in Nigeria who, along with accomplices and AI tools, used Stafford and dozens of others as unwitting money mules, routing stolen money into crypto and overseas accounts that US warrants couldn't touch.

"They're looking for a US citizen with a pulse," Johnson says. "If that person happens to have some money they can steal in the process, that's an added bonus." The story shows how romance scams now double as infrastructure for broader financial crimes, and how even when US investigators map the networks, cross-border prosecutions often stall. As for Stafford, he was definitely angry and felt betrayed once he got Johnson's call and the whole operation unfolded, but he also felt something else. "It was actually a big relief," he says. "I'd had this gut feeling for a long time. It wasn't love toward the end. I was being used." For the full case file—texts, the money trail, and what happened to the real redhead in the photos that Stafford was sent—check out Barrett's full piece here.
