E. Jean Carroll isn't waiting around now that the Supreme Court has shut down President Trump's latest appeal. One day after the justices declined to review a jury's finding that Trump sexually abused and defamed her, Carroll asked the trial judge to release more than $5 million that Trump previously deposited into a court-controlled account, reports CNN. Her lawyers urged a sped-up schedule on the issue, proposing that all legal briefs be filed by July 10, arguing further delay is costly in a case that's almost four years old. The Supreme Court's refusal to hear Trump's challenge effectively ended his options in that case, clearing the way for the money to be paid out.
The AP notes that the deposited funds have grown to more than $5.8 million with interest, according to Carroll's legal team. They also note that Trump has started defaming her again in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. "To date, Carroll has agreed to each of [the] defendant's many requests to delay the payment he owes her," they wrote in their court filing. "Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, that cooperation ends today." They conclude: "It is time for him to pay Carroll."
Trump's team has floated a long-shot move: asking the court to reconsider, a request he has about 25 days to file. Carroll's attorneys say they've already rejected a plea from Trump's side to hold off on collecting while he pursues that path. Separately, Trump is preparing to ask the Supreme Court to intervene in a different Carroll case, the one in which a jury ordered him to pay her $83 million for defamation. As he waits on that case, he headed to social media to gripe about this one, per ABC News. "I will continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength," he wrote on Truth Social.
