Fighting Between US, Iran Intensifies Again

The cycle of attacks in Iran ramped up again overnight:

• US forces launched heavy strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, hitting roughly 140 Iranian military targets after Tehran again moved against commercial shipping, reports the Wall Street Journal. American jets, drones, and warships struck radars, missile launchers, and drone depots.
• In response, Iran fired at US allies that host American bases in Jordan, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait, per the New York Times. Tehran also announced that it was closing the Strait of Hormuz to all traffic until further notice, per CNBC.

• The latest flare-up came after the US said Iran fired on a Cypriot-flagged tanker in the strait. Tehran confirmed it struck what it deemed to be a "violating" vessel, though both sides disagree on what "violating" means under the loosely written memorandum of understanding signed weeks ago. Hopes of working out a more concrete peace deal appear to be unraveling.
• The rising tensions come as President Trump and Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, publicly swap threats.
