In a post on X, Zelensky praised Svyrydenko's "effective work" and said he'd offered her an important new role involving relations with a key partner, Reuters reports. He did not name her successor but wrote the decision is part of a change in political strategy, per the AP. Svyrydenko posted that she was proud to have led the government "during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine's modern history," writing, "I remain ready to serve the Ukrainian state."
Zelensky signaled impending changes among top law enforcement officials. The government is dealing with a major corruption scandal centered on a $100 million kickback scheme at state nuclear firm Energoatom, a case that has touched figures close to Zelensky and complicated efforts to reassure Ukraine's Western backers. Lawmakers floated several possible replacements for Svyrydenko, whose exit requires Parliament's approval, including Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, and Naftogaz chief Serhiy Koretskyi. Many expect Svyrydenko's next assignment to be Ukraine's ambassador to the US, per Reuters.
The overhaul would be his fourth major reorganization of the government since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Zelensky, who has remained in office under martial law because wartime elections are prohibited, has periodically reshuffled his government in an effort to bring fresh momentum to his administration, per the AP. "Each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with substantial experience who is capable of implementing what we agree on at the leaders' level and what the Ukrainian people expect," Zelensky said.
